Your Health and Your Smile
For centuries it has been noted that the mouth is the window to the body and issues that affect the whole body regularly show up in the mouth. What wasn’t recognized was that improving dental health is essential to maintaining general health.
When you have active infections in your gums or jaw-bone there is an inflammatory response from the body. There are also toxins released from the bacteria, which can affect your stomach, heart and other systems. These increase the risk of cancer, strokes and heart attacks. In some cases by as much as 50%!
What does that mean?
It means it is vital to have a healthy mouth. Leaving untreated gum disease, abscessed teeth etc is damaging to your overall health. As well as increasing the risk of tooth loss or a dangerous infection there is a real danger to your health if you have poor health in your mouth.
Prevention is Best
Seeing a dentist & hygienist regularly is the best thing you can do to improve your dental health. A hygienist will help remove infection from your gums and can place fluoride varnish to strengthen teeth against infection. They can also seal teeth against decay helping to prevent infection.
Your dentist can check the early signs of gum disease and infections helping to prevent the overall health issues that can occur.
How Often?
We generally recommend seeing the dentist & Hygienist every 6 months.
For people who are on medications, who have diabetes and other chronic conditions they should normally see the hygienist every 3 months for optimal health. Anyone with a history of periodontal disease should come every 3 months also.
