Why can’t I open my mouth/stiff jaw?

Why can’t I open my mouth/stiff jaw?

Dr. Altona Myers explains...

Sometimes an infection in the back of the mouth (usually around wisdom teeth) can make it hard to open the mouth. The infection and swelling can block the muscles from working properly.

It's important to visit your dentist when you notice any changes in your jaw, as a stiff jaw or difficulty swallowing may be caused by wisdom tooth pain, something which won't go away if you continue to ignore it.

If you grind your teeth in your sleep (Often happens with stress) then the muscles can be overworked and can be inflamed and painful. In those cases it can be difficult to open properly and you may even get headaches. If you suspect that you may grind your teeth, we recommend purchasing a custom made nightguard. Worn nightly, this can help prevent further wearing down of the teeth. Purchasing a nightguard is incredibly straightforward, simply call into us to have your teeth impressions taken and our on-site laboratory can make your brand new nightguard the very same day.
