How often should I go to the dentist?

How often should I go to the dentist?

If you are visiting your dentist for the first time at a new dental clinic, your dentist will carry out an oral exam of your mouth and gums for any signs of oral cancer or other diseases, gum disease, sensitivity or recession, and then your teeth for cavities. If the dentist feels it necessary, a nurse will take your X-Ray to investigate any issues or to find early signs of decay. Decay doesn’t become visible or cause pain until it reaches more advanced stages. An X-Ray is also useful to see bone density, tooth structure, or any pending infection at the roots of the teeth etc

The dentist will want to know information about your general health, any current medicine use and any recent changes to your overall health. This is a good time to mention any sensitivity you may be experiencing, any lumps or bumps you have noticed and any health concerns that may be on your mind. Some medicines and illnesses can make you more prone to dry mouth and cavities so it is extremely important to make your dentist fully aware of your overall health.

If you suffer from dental anxiety or are afraid of going to the dentist, let your dentist know! Dental treatments have changed hugely over the past few years as have pain or discomfort management options. We welcome nervous patients at Seapoint Clinic and have seen huge success from a visit on a patient’s first day to the full completion of a treatment plan, all fears and anxieties gone away? Your dentist will discuss your fears and explain how to minimise any pain and to make you feel as comfortable as possible at all times.

You should visit the dentist twice annually unless you are undergoing plans that include Orthodontics or Periodontal disease treatment, and unless otherwise advised by your dentist.
