What Are Safe Foods For My Teeth?
Dr. David Bell explains...
When it comes to your dental health, you really are what you eat. Foods and drinks high in sugar are a leading cause of tooth decay. Your oral health is quite often the first area to decline when your diet is less than ideal, meaning it's vital you choose healthy foods to improve both your overall diet and the health of your mouth.
As we embrace foods from far off cultures on a daily basis, oral health has suffered. In years gone by, our grandparents would have stuck to the plain old 'meat and two veg' dish, which obviously won't do much harm to your teeth. But even then, seemingly harmless foods such as cheese and milk do contain sugars. This is why you shouldn't leave a bottle in a baby's mouth and always wash it out after use. Generally speaking, still water is the ideal drink for your teeth.
Energy drinks, wine, beer and ciders are all highly acidic, making them harmful to teeth. If you drink a significant amount, then your enamel may start to wear away over time. Grinding your teeth while you sleep can also soften enamel, resulting in the enamel wearing away up to seven times faster. This can lead to chipping, increased staining and general tooth wear. If you do drink energy drinks such as Red Bull, we recommend you try not to drink them throughout the day, as you are actually feeding the tooth eating bacteria by doing so. Instead, try to have it with a meal instead and always brush afterwards.
