How To Maintain A Healthy Smile

How To Maintain A Healthy Smile

Maintaining a healthy smile needn't be that difficult. Along with regular check-ups and cleaning, a few small decisions in your daily routine can see an improved smile and avoid tooth loss, gum disease, infection and bone loss.

Brushing Technique

Needless to say, a quick once over with a toothbrush isn't going to properly clean and polish your teeth. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends that the brush be held at a 45-degree angle near the gum line, with short strokes along the sides and top of your teeth, followed by several shorter strokes to focus on the back of your mouth.

Brush Often

Although people do tend to brush frequently, however the majority of people don't brush enough for maintain a healthy smile. We recommend you brush for at least two minutes, twice a day. If you're having trouble gauging your time, simply put on a song or even a timer to ensure you're giving the necessary time to properly clean your teeth.

Don't Forget Your Toothbrush

Always be sure to pick the correct toothbrush for your mouth. The International Dental Health Association recommend that most adults choose a small or medium sized toothbrush, with a head and bristles small enough to reach into the crevices of your molar.

Remember to Floss

Flossing can be often overlooked with it comes to dental hygiene, as many of us don't have the time to spare in the rush out the door. However, flossing can help remove food particles and germs that everyday brushing may not be able to reach.

Use Mouthwash

To ensure a thoroughly clean mouth, it is recommended you use a mouthwash. Using mouthwash will help prevent debris accumulating along the gum which may cause irritation and gingivitis. However, not all mouthwashes are actually useful so it is important to buy a brand mouthwash.

Clean Your Brush

You don't need to buy any special equipment to ensure your toothbrush remains clean. Simply give your brush a good rinse after each use and allow to air dry. It's important to never cover your toothbrush, as by doing so enables new bacteria to breed.

Change Your Brush

Over time, the bristles on your toothbrush will begin to deteriorate, so if you're using a the same toothbrush over the period of a few months you may not be getting the best clean. Instead, make a point of buying a new brush every three to four months.
