Tips for Basic Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is the practice of keeping the mouth and teeth clean to prevent dental problems, especially the common dental caries, gingivitis and bad breath.
Here are a few tips to improve your overall oral hygiene:
- Brush at least twice a day, for two minutes
- Floss at least once a day
- Change your toothbrush regularly
- Use interdental cleaners if you have larger spaces between your teeth
- Use mouthwash, but avoid those with a higher alcohol count
- Limit snacks between meals, especially those with high sugar counts.
- If you smoke, QUIT!
- Examine your mouth regularly for sores (on your gums, teeth and tongue), swollen gums, discoloured teeth or any lesions that don't go away
- Visit your dentist regularly - Most children and adults should see their dentist for a regular cleaning and check-up every six months. People at a greater risk for oral diseases should have dental check ups more than twice a year, such as smokers, people who drink a lot of alcohol, those who suffer from diabetes or who are pregnant, those with periodental disease or gum disease and those who have had surgeries, braces or dental implants in the past
