The Health Effects of Edentulism

The Health Effects of Edentulism

Edentulism is the condition more commonly known as being toothless to some degree. If you have lost some teeth then this is known as partial edentuslism, a common condition in today’s decline of oral health. But why is edentulism becoming more and more common?

It is mainly down to the person’s lifestyle; people who prefer to drink sugary drinks and smoke are more likely to suffer the full effect of edentulism than let’s say a person who lives a very healthy lifestyle. So to prevent edentulism it is simple, look after your oral health. This means brushing, flossing and mouthwash on a regular basis.

Effects of Edentulism

One of the main effects of edentulism is the psychological health of the person who has the condition. Edentulism causes people to lack in confidence when around other people. For example smiling and laughing, this makes the person nervous and cautious about their oral appearance. If edentulous individuals are limited to the daily activity such as smiling and laughing with friends then in some cases this may lead to a cause of depression.

Another main effect to edentulism is a health effect. In most cases edentulous individuals will more than likely avoid hard foods such as meat, apples and carrots etc. It is known in most cases that the diet of a person who suffers with edentulism will lack in proteins, vitamins and minerals and good fats, which we all know cannot be good.

Back to the psychological side of things, most of these individuals will find it hard to eat any sort of food in front of other people whether it is good or bad. Social activities are very limited like going out to dinner with friends can leave the individual feeling uncomfortable and embarrassed.

How to Treat Edentulism

Treating or dealing with Edentulism depends on the severity of the condition. Preventing the condition should be the most important part if you don’t already suffer from the condition, and to do this you can range from just regular brushing, flossing and mouth wash to actual bleaching of the teeth and full mouth disinfection.

If there are teeth already missing then the only option is for surgical treatment. We supply a wide range of quality surgical treatments which will give you the smile you deserve.
