The Dangers of Having Dirty Dentures

The Dangers of Having Dirty Dentures

In modern society, the term ‘denture’ is more commonly used instead of ‘false teeth’ to describe a removable plate or frame holding artificial teeth. The modern denture may have improved since its first inception; however it can still present an array of painful and dangerous problems to the wearer. Your gums and bone will change over time but the denture remains the same, meaning the following issues can arise;

  • Gum and mouth irritation
  • Problems eating and speaking
  • Dentures moving around in your mouth

Another pressing issue is the danger of dirty dentures. If you wear a full or partial denture, there is large possibility that it is covered in a thin layer of bacteria known as biofilms, the official name of the substance we commonly call ‘plaque’. This can form when the bacteria insert themselves into the material of the false teeth and bind to form a layer of bacteria that becomes very difficult to clean.

Doctor Ed O’Flaherty, one of the principal dentists at Seapoint Clinic, explains that some of these biofilm germs can be dangerous bugs such as MRSA;“They can lie around on dentures and are often the causes of mouth infections and contribute to the decay of any remaining natural teeth”.

  • use a recommended denture cleaner instead of toothpaste
  • Soak dentures overnight in a denture cleanser (rinse after soaking the following morning)
  • don't use hot water when rinsing as it could damage them

“It is our goal here at Seapoint to provide our patients with the most suitable treatment for missing teeth, leaving them with a smile that radiates confidence. We offer a modern, implant-secured denture called Click-tite, a step above old fashioned dentures. We also provide a range of dental implant services that eradicate the need for a removable denture, something we highly recommend and promote as feel that dentures are steadily becoming a thing of the past” Dr. Ed O’Flaherty.
