It’s time to replace your old silver fillings!

It’s time to replace your old silver fillings!

Old silver amalgam fillings are composed of a liquid mercury and a metal alloy fixture. All this means is that this is an almost prehistoric way to fill cavities and prevent tooth decay! In recent years there have been a number of long term problems that have come to light with these mercury fillings.

Problems associated with amalgam fillings:

  • Your old silver fillings are known to hide signs of tooth decay. Because they show up opaque on X-Rays, it makes it difficult to see a cavity beneath a filling. This may seem mundane, but it could be the difference between getting another filling and having a root canal procedure!
  • In some cases, teeth have become discoloured from silver fillings after a long period of time. We often have patients coming to us with gray teeth after the silver has seeped into the enamel itself. The grey discolouration becomes progressively darker over time and teeth begin to look dead and unappealing.
  • The mercury fillings have also been associated with cracking and chipping over time causing great trauma and pain to the nerve.

Options:

White fillings transform your teeth by getting rid of ugly black stuffings and letting your natural tooth shine through. They can also be used to reshape teeth or close small gaps as cosmetic bondings. Fillings are one of the most common methods of restoring teeth. They usually fill a hole in the tooth that has been caused by decay, playing an important role in helping us to keep a tooth for many more years.

All the mixtures we do at Seapoint Clinic are Mercury Free. We will remove your old mercury layers safely for you if you are unhappy with the appearance of them.

We use the most effective, modern, tooth-coloured materials. Unlike the more traditional grey amalgam, the tooth-coloured ones look very natural, so no-one will be able to tell you have them. We employ the most gentle and comfortable anaesthetic techniques, as well as the strongest and most effective anaesthetics.
