How Safe is Tooth Whitening?

How Safe is Tooth Whitening?

For many years tooth whitening has been proven to be safe and effective.

Although in the few past years, the bleach that is used has become more concentrated leaving you with small amounts of sensitivity for one to two days afterwards. Some people will find that the teeth become very sensitive and it may discourage them from whitening again in the future. There are some ways in which sensitivity can be prevented when whitening your teeth.

There are several ways to stop the sensitivity afterwards if it does affect you.

  • Brush your teeth with special toothpaste that is made to help with sensitivity. Sensodyne is a well known brand used to combat sensitivity.
  • Ask your dentist for a product that contains fluoride as it helps soothe the nerve endings in the tooth.
  • If you are whitening your teeth using specially made bleaching trays, then you can put some sensitive toothpaste into the trays and place the trays over your teeth for an hour prior to whitening.
  • We always advise patients to have a full dental examination prior to whitening their teeth as this will detect if there is any dental problems and will help to prevent sensitivity after whitening.

After the tooth whitening has come into the full effect your smile will be whiter than ever and it has been proven to boost people’s confidence.
